Shillong, Nov 20: Health and Family Welfare Minister, A. L. Hek today informed that the Reid Chest TB hospital will continue to function from Mawprem.
According to Hek, the hospital will function from the same location since the KPC group headed by Kali Pradip Chaudhuri has agreed to shift the site of the medical college from the proposed site to Umsawli, Mawdianghdiang.
It may be reminded, the construction of the medical college was supposed to be at the premises of the Reid Chest TB hospital in the city.
The Meghalaya government had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in 2012 with the KPC group for setting up a 500-bedded hospital-cum-medical college in Shillong.
The government also decided to shift the TB hospital to its new building at Umsawli to pave way for the construction of the medical college.
When asked about the existing TB Hospital at Umsawli, he said that the hospital has been converted into a Corona Care Centre.
Moreover, the health minister said, the department now need another five acres of land to construct a new medical college and to fulfill the guidelines of the Medical Council of India (MCI) guidelines.
“In Umsawli we have only 17 acres and the requirements as per the guidelines is 20 acres of land for construction of a medical college,” Hek stated.
Hek informed that the department have written to the Urban Affairs Department to allot another five acres of land for the Shillong Medical College.
