Shillong, Feb 20: BJP legislator from South Shillong, Sanbor Shullai on Saturday said that the elevation of Ernest Mawrie to the post of party president was manipulated.
“Who is he to ask for a joint statement, he is elected by manipulation. I am elected by the people of South Shillong,” Shullai said.
The South Shillong MLA was reacting to Mawrie’s demands that the two BJP, MLAs – A. L. Hek and Shullai should give a joint statement that the saffron party does not want him as the party president of the state.
Shullai also said that the recent statement made by National People’s Party (NPP) leader and Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma that a majority of BJP leaders and the party’s two MLAs favour the removal of Ernest Mawrie was true.
“We have received many complaints and soon we will convene a meeting and nearly 75 percent to 80 percent of the BJP members are for his (Ernest) ouster,” Shullai told reporters.
The BJP legislator alleged that soon after Mawrie took charge of the party in Meghalaya many party leaders from Ri-Bhoi, Jaintia Hills, West Khasi Hills and Shillong City have resigned in protest against the functioning of Mawrie.
Shullai also said that the party leaders of the Meghalaya BJP had informed about the issue to the national vice president in-charge Meghalaya Chauba Ao. According to the BJP legislator, Ao told them that the complaint should be in writing and not verbally, before he can take it up with the central leaders.
On the statement made by Mawrie that the NPP cannot interfere in the internal affairs of the BJP, Shullai said that the latter’s statement was “childish”.
“He (Conrad) has the right to make the statement because since the beginning our (BJP) central leaders gave us the green signal to support the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government under the leadership of Conrad K Sangma. So if we have to pull out from the government, who is he to give the statement,” the BJP legislator added.
