State policy for weighbridges recognises the problem of overloading by trucks

SHILLONG, Nov 3: The state policy for weighbridges which was recently approved by the state’s Cabinet aims to check and regulate the operation of weighbridges and check points in the state.

According to the policy, the state government recognises the problem of overloading by trucks entering and leaving the state at various locations and the need to have a streamlined policy on the setting up of weighbridges and checking stations at various locations to facilitate the weighment of all load bearing vehicles while at the same time ensuring that such vehicles are not subjected to undue harassment.

“The government also recognises the need to plug the loopholes in revenue collection and prevent loss of revenue to the state exchequer and hence this comprehensive policy,” sources said.

The Transport department is the nodal department for issuing of permission for installation, regulation, maintenance, and operation of weighbridges in the state.

According to sources, the government will encourage setting up of fully automated weigh-in-motion weighbridges to ensure accuracy and prevent leakage of revenue and also to ensure free-flow of traffic.

Also all weighbridges and checkpoints will be geo tagged to prevent any unauthorised weighbridge/check point from coming up.

Sources also informed that if the government, at any time, decides to link all the recognised weighbridges to a central server, the licensee shall make effort to facilitate its setting up.

Meanwhile, sources also added that a bar-coded weighment certificate shall be issued to all vehicles.

Also the district transport authority shall ensure that the transport weigbridges within their respective districts are run in complaince to all directions of the state, central, Supreme Court, High Court and National Green Tribunal as the case may be and shall submit a monthly report to the office of the Commissioner of Transport.
