Tathagata Roy: Coming to Shillong is like home-coming

SHILLONG, Aug 25: New Meghalaya Governor, Tathagata Roy on Saturday his appointment as the Governor of Meghlaya was more of a homecoming.

Speaking to media persons after his oath taking, Roy said that when he received the order to move from Tripura to Meghalaya he was a little sad because he had set his mind on staying in Tripura for three years.

“But then I was also very happy because coming to Meghalaya coming to Shillong is like home coming,” the newly appointed Governor said.

His brother Prof. Saugata Roy, the Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member, was born in Shillong.

“I spent my early childhood here, my next younger brother Saugata who is an MP now he had been born here in Ganesh Das hospital. This city I know like the back of my hand all the way from Garikhana to Happy Valley,” Roy added.

The Meghalaya Governor also said that all his relatives who were in Shillong have all died and their decendants are now settled all over the world.

Roy said that his cousin, Hiralal Roy was a professor in St Anthony’s College and was popularly known as “Harold” Roy.

He, however lamented the traffic jam in the city.

Roy suggested the use of public transport in order to overcome the problem of traffic jams in Shillong.

“Emphasis should be on public rather than private transport. If good public transport is arranged then road occupancy will be less..private transport must be discourage,” the Governor said.

Roy also said that Shillong’s topography is such that one cannot have widening of roads or fly overs to a very large extent.
