Tura, June 16: North Garo hills police on Sunday arrested a group of dacoits, who had been active on the NH – 62 after a night long raid.
The criminals arrested have been identified as Sental M Sangma (18), Willi M Sangma (21) and Bibibirth M Sangma (27). All three are residents of Mejolgre Wanso in Rongmil under Rongjeng PS in East Garo Hills.
According to police, the three arrested were part of a larger gang of criminals who were involved in various cases of loot and dacoity along the NH – 62.
The operation this morning was carried out by the Kharkutta PS with support from the Wageasi OGC with the criminals being arrested this morning between 3 and 5 am. Sources said other members of the gang were on the run after the arrest of the 3 gang members.
“Based on information from our sources, a joint operation was launched on the night of June 15. In the raids three hardcore criminals were arrested and other members of the group have absconded. Weapons used by the criminals were also seized during the operation. We recovered one country made SBL gun from the gang,” said SP in charge of NGH, Billy Graham Marak.
The gang was involved in a series of highway crimes including firing upon a Bolero vehicleas well as stopping vehicles with the intention to loot. The gang is also suspected to attack vehicles by throwing stones at the windshield to break the glass to cause injury to the driver to stop vehicles and then loot them.
“We are doing our best to end dacoity on the NH 62 and efforts are on to nab the other members of the gang” said the acting SP.
