Shillong, Apr 19: Three persons were killed and one grievously injured after a truck capsized and turned turtle at Lumshnong, near Forest IB, Jaintia Hills on Saturday. The four persons had illegally boarded the truck in between Deinchynrum and Byndihati, police said.
Police informed that the truck bearing registration no. NL-02-N-4222, which was loaded with bitumen, was arriving from Beltola, Guwahati and was headed to Mizoram.
The truck originally had only 2 occupants, the driver and the helper when it entered Meghalaya, but police state that 4 persons boarded the truck illegally somewhere between Deinchynrum and Byndihati.
According to police, these 4 persons were hiding between the loaded bitumen drums on the back side to avoid detection. 2 of them reportedly died on the spot while one was immediately rescued by Lumshnong Police but he later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
It was informed that the 4th person survived after a 6 hour long rescue operation “which was extremely tough because of heavy rain and thunderstorm,” police said. He was referred to Silchar Medical College & Hospital for treatment.
A case has been registered and the driver and helper of the truck has been arrested. The bodies of the deceased persons have been handed over to family members after post mortem.
“We thank the members of civil society, Waheh Shnong and cement plants specially STAR CEMENT & DALMIA CEMENT who promptly helped us in rescue operation by providing manpower, equipment as well as ambulance,” they said.
