SHILLONG, April 28: Meghalaya police today busted a gang which trafficked minor girls to metros and other parts of the country.
This came to light when two persons were apprehended while they were trying to traffick a girl lured by them.
Initially a woman was Icilina B Sangma (of Insambal in East Garo Hills) was caught by NGOs who later led them to another person -Khagrak Marak alias Rajen of Goalpara district of Assam.
The apprehended persons confessed that they had been involved in the trafficking of two more girls, one of who had died in an accident.
According to North Garo Hills, Superintendent of Police, Dalton P Marak, of the two girls trafficked earlier, one was sent to Mumbai and another to New Delhi.
“The girl from New Delhi has died according to them and we are verifying the facts. The two are currently being interrogated at Mendipathar where a case has been lodged against them. We are trying to find out if more of them are involved,” Marak said.
According to social activist, Jaynie N Sangma, in the instant case the trafficker, Icilina had lured a 12 year old girl from Kharkutta this morning.
The minor girl was apprently staying at a rented accommodation. The trafficker’s sister also lived in the same village.
According to Jaynie, the trafficker had told her would be victim that she would take her to a better place as the house she was staying in was not fit for them.
Icilina, on Saturday morning at about 4 am went to the girl’s house once again and took the girl with her.
“When the house owner woke up in the morning and found the girl missing, she suspected something wrong and immediately called up the trafficker asking if the 12 year old was with her. She initially refused but when the woman threatened to call the police, she admitted to the fact and also said she was in Dudhnoi. We were alerted immediately after,” Jaynie said.
The traficker gave the name of her accomplice – Rajen, who had taken the two girls previously.
The police was informed who brought the woman to Mendipathar where they asked her to call Rajen to Mendipathar to take the girl.
“She told us that she only got Rs 1000 per girl she trafficked though we don’t believe it,” added Jaynie.
Both the girls trafficked earlier were in their early teens with one being from Williamnagar.
Rajen came to the town of Mendipathar where a trap was laid for him by the police. He was immediately arrested after being identified.
