Triangular fight for Tura LS seat

TURA, Mar 25: The Tura Parliamentary will see a triangular fight between the National People’s Party (NPP), Congress and BJP.

On Monday, Congress heavyweight and former Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma and BJP’s Rikman G Momin filed their nominations on the last day.

It may be mentioned that Momin was fielded at the eleventh hour by the BJP.

Congress candidate, Dr Sangma was accompanied his wife and Mahendraganj legislator, Dikkanchi D Shira, daughter and Ampati MLA, Miani D Shira and brother Zenith Sangma who is a legislator of Rangsakona.

This will be Dr Sangma’s third attempt, from the Tura seat. Earlier on two other occasions in 2004 and 2006 by-poll, he had contested against (Late) Purno Agitok Sangma.

His opponent, Agatha K Sangma is a two time MP and former Minister in the Union cabinet. She won the 2008 by poll when her father (Late) Sangma decided to come back to the state politics. In the 2009 general elections she again won. On both occasion she won on an NCP ticket.

Meanwhile, BJP’s Momin – had contested the 2018 Assembly election from the party from Rongjeng constituency.

For the Selsella by-poll, there is a four way contest. On Monday, three more candidates Congress’ June Eliana R Marak who is the widow of MLA Clement Marak, United Democratic Party’s, Sayeedullah Nongrum and the BJP’s Adorsho Sangma filed their nominations.
