Tributes paid to Congress MLAs (L) Dr. Azad Zaman & (L) David Nongrum

Shillong, Mar 5: A day after the demise of Congress MLA from Rajabala Dr. Azad Zaman, tributes poured in for the late MLA during obituary references on Day 1 of Budget Session 2021.

Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh expressed his disbelief on the passing of (L) Dr. Zaman. “Till today, I cannot believe it. He was such a gem of a person,” he said.

In his tribute, the Assembly Speaker also remembered Late David A. Nongrum, saying, “He was a dynamic leader who was very close to the people of his constituency.”

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma expressed his sadness on the demise of two of the state’s youngest legislators, Late MLA David A. Nongrum and Late Dr. Azad Zaman.

“Many could not digest the news (of Nongrum’s demise). We were with him just a few days back. Whether it was the ruling or the opposition, David shared such a good relationship with everyone,” he said.

“Yesterday, we got a shock when we heard the demise of Late Dr. Azad Zaman who was again associated with everybody across party lines,” he stated.

The Chief Minister stated that both the members have contributed a lot to the house in the last 3 years.

Leader of Opposition, Dr. Mukul Sangma also conveyed his condolences on the sudden passing of legislators, (L) David A. Nongrum and (L) Dr. Azad Zaman.

“It’s very difficult to accept the reality of his passing. I’ve known David A. Nongrum even before he joined us as the member of this August House while he was actively involved in assisting his father and in the process, we became very close. I could see him having that resolve to ultimately serve the people when he joined us in active political life,” he said.

In his tribute to (L) Dr. Azad Zaman, he recalled, “We would engage in discussion past midnight. On a number of occasions he would reassure me that he’s working to bridge the gap amongst the electorates of a constituency which were earlier completely polarized. I could see him as a very promising leader of a nontribal community who could have contributed so much to the people of his constituency.”

“Losing such leaders who have tried to work hard to create a sense of belongingness amongst all sections of the society, even across party lines, I do feel we have lost promising leaders who could have made a difference in our state,” he added.

Other legislators dedicated their obituaries included Health Minister A.L Hek, Congress MLAs Ampareen Lyngdoh, PT Sawkmie, Mohendro Rapsang, George Lyngdoh, Mayralborn Syiem and more.
