UDP’s Balajiedkupar Synrem wins Shella bye-election by thumping margin

SHILLONG, Oct 24: Balajiedkupar Synrem of the United Democratic Party (UDP) won the Shella assembly bye-election defeatng his nearest rival and independent candidate, Grace Mary Kharpuri by a margin of 6221 votes.

Synrem the son of late Dr Donkupar Roy secured 12002 votes while Kharpuri managed to poll 5781 votes.

The bye-election was necessitated after the untimely demise of Dr Roy on July 28.

He represented Shella constituency for seven consecutive terms starting in 1988.

There were six candidates on the fray.

Mosjo Rockefeller Wanswett of the People’s Democratic Party (PDF) came third with 4327 votes.

The others in the fray were Bantyngshain Ryngnga of the Congress who secured 1715 votes, Joshua Warjri of the BJP got a mere 742 votes and independent candidate Komen Laitmon secured 444 votes. Altogether 188 voters pressed the NOTA button.

Late Dr Roy’s cumulative winning margin over last seven terms is 3857 against his son’s current margin of 6221.
