Tura, Apr 14: April 20 this year will be celebrated as ‘Ujjwala Diwas’ under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) with the aim of enrolling eight crore LPG customers as part of the ‘Gram Swaraj Abhiyan’.
The drive will be led by the ministry through its PSU Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to promote amongst the rural consumers, the safe and sustained use of LPG through peer group interactions on a large scale.
As a part of the same drive over 15000 LPG Panchayats will be held on the occasion of Ujjwala Diwas on the expectation of the day helping to achieve the target of 8 crore enrollments.
A LPG panchayat is a community meeting which will serve as a platform for LPG consumers to interact with each other, promote mutual learning and share their experiences. The LPG Panchayat would be organized all over the country, including the five districts of Garo Hills by different distributors in their respective areas.
In Garo Hills, LPG Panchayats will be organized in 12 blocks of the region with a target of enrolling at least 100 new LPG connection beneficiaries. Safety instructions as well as insurance cards will also be provided to beneficiaries on Ujwala Diwas.
On the day, the LPG panchayats will look to educate users on how to use LPG safely as well as provide information on its multiple benefits like health, environment and empowerment to women. Each Panchayat will be targeting the participation of at least 500 women and the
Key activities on Ujjwala Diwas will include organization of panchayats, distribution of new connections to beneficiaries, explaining PMUY and collection of KYC documents.
“Women who have experienced the benefits of cooking with LPG can now boost the confidence of other women about adopting this clean and green cooking fuel safely and without any reservations or misconceptions. Sharing of experience by actual users and learning through peer group interaction is the main aim of the panchayat,” said Mukesh Kumar, an official who was a part of the meeting today at Tura.
Other company officials present during the briefing were district nodal officers for West and East Garo Hills, Utpal Das and Anchit Das.
