Zenith questions Kembhavi’s appointment as MeECL CMD

Shillong, Sept 16: Congress Spokesperson and MLA, Zenith Sangma, on Wednesday, expressed their discontentment over the appointment of IAS officer Arun Kembhavi as the Chairperson-cum-managing Director and Director of Corporate Affairs of MeECL.

The Congress party alleged that his appointment was only for the vested interests of the ruling government.

“What is the logic behind replacing a junior officer with another junior officer? It has made me convinced to think that this is nothing but just to be able to pressurise the officer to work at the behest of the people in power, the political bosses in the government. This kind of practice is being done,” he said.

Zenith also added that the present MeECL CMD is overburdened with responsibilities. Kembhavi is the Additional Secretary in-charge of Mining & Geology department and Commissioner of taxes.

“On one hand he is a junior officer another he has been given lots of responsibilities making him overburdened, how can he give justice to his responsibilities?” he said.

Reiterating their accusations of mismanagement in MeECL, the MLA stated that after his last press briefing, some officers rectified a machine that was not generating electricity for one year in Stage III of Umiam Hydroelectric Project without incurring any expenditure.

Earlier, he had informed that two machines in Stage III and Stage IV of Umiam Hydroelectric Project generating 30 megawatts each were not functioning for the last one year, incurring a loss of over Rs. 100 crores.
